Essay: A 300 to 500-word essay in response to ONE of the following prompts:
1: Describe how government impacts your daily life. Try to be as specific and comprehensive as possible about the various ways that government programs/policies/decisions have an effect on you.
2: Write a reflective essay on civic engagement among young adults. What are the best ways for young people to become involved in community and political affairs? What barriers do you think are the hardest to overcome in order to become civically engaged? In what ways have you been and/or intend to become involved in American government and politics?
3: Supreme Court cases are hugely important for determining what the words of the Bill of Rights actually mean in practice. We could spend the whole course reviewing key civil liberties cases. But there are too many to analyze each of them in depth for the scope of this course. Instead, choose ONE of the landmark cases that’s of interest to you. Describe the basic facts of the case and how the Court ruled. What are the implications of the ruling for how our civil liberties are defined in practice? How might things be different in the country today if the court ruled the other way? Do you think the Court made the right decision or did they get it wrong? Explain. Choose from one of the cases from Chapter 4 listed here: McDonald v. Chicago; Lemon v. Kurtzman; Sherbert v. Verner; Employment Division v. Smith; Burwell v. Hobby Lobby; Schenck v. United States; Texas v. Johnson; New York Times v. Sullivan; Tinker v. Des Moines; United States v. Miller; Mapp v. Ohio; Miranda v. Arizona; Gideon v. Wainwright; Griswold v. Connecticut; Roe v. Wade; Planned Parenthood v. Casey; Lawrence v. Texas; Carpenter v. United States
4: Write an essay reflecting on the racial wealth gap. Having watched the video, “Explained – Racial Wealth Gap,” describe the causes of the wealth gap. How persuasive did you find the arguments presented in the video? What events/arguments/data presented in the video did you find most interesting? What, if anything, do you think should be done to address the disparity in wealth between blacks and whites? Also, how central do you consider the issue of racial wealth inequality to other civil rights issues? In other words, do you see any links between this issue and other issues such as policy brutality, the war on drugs, and criminal sentencing? Find at least one outside source (other than the video) to support your position.
5: Choose one of the critical thinking questions posed at the end of one of the module’s chapters (1 through 5) in your Openstax textbook and write an essay in response.
Your textbook for this course is: Glen Kurtz, et al. 2021. American Government, 3e
